A Vision Born in the Clinical Wards
Every great initiative starts with a moment of unbearable clarity. For the founders of the PediHelp Initiative, that moment did not happen in a corporate boardroom; it happened directly on the clinical wards of the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan.
As a medical student, Mercy’s training was intensely focused on the precise science of healing: diagnosing complex illnesses, understanding pharmacology, and mastering life-saving clinical procedures. However, navigating the wards taught us a harsh, systemic lesson that medical textbooks simply do not cover. We routinely met children who urgently needed surgical intervention, yet whose parents—often daily wage earners—simply could not raise the funds. For months, the only care these children received was basic palliative management because definitive, curative surgery was financially out of reach.
It became overwhelmingly clear that medicine often begins with a narrow, immediate focus: “diagnose, treat, and stabilize the patient in front of you.” But a much wider reality exists. Clinical outcomes are shaped just as much by financial systems as they are by surgical expertise.
Transitioning from Empathy to Action
Empathy is a powerful human emotion, but without an operational structure, it cannot scale. We realized early on that simply feeling sorry for these financially constrained families was not enough. We needed to build a sustainable, highly efficient mechanism to intercept these crises.
Launched in 2025, PediHelp was born out of absolute necessity. It began as a targeted response to clear medical bills for vulnerable children, but we quickly understood that to create lasting, systemic change, we had to build an institution designed to last.
We combined clinical insight with operational excellence, forging direct partnerships with attending physicians and hospital administrations. By establishing strict frameworks—such as our 72-hour clinical response protocol—we ensured that funding goes directly to hospital billing departments, completely removing the administrative friction that delays care.
Fully Registered and Scaling for Impact
Today, we are incredibly proud that PediHelp is a fully registered entity with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC). We have transitioned from a passionate, ward-level initiative into a structured non-governmental organization.
Guided by the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals—specifically focusing on SDG 3 (Good Health), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships)—our vision is uncompromising. By 2030, PediHelp will have directly facilitated life-saving medical interventions for 1,000 families facing critical health crises.
The journey from the hospital wards to a registered foundation has been rigorous, but it is only the beginning. Our overarching vision is to transform the national healthcare landscape, but our daily operational focus remains deeply embedded in serving the one child right in front of us.
